A new documentary about the life of Michael Schumacher is set to be released, featuring interviews with his wife and dad.

Wife Corinna and the rest of Schumacher's family have remained private and guarded when it comes to his health – but will speak in new documentary Schumacher, due to be released in Germany and Switzerland in December.

It's the first documentary that has had the backing of the family. Corinna is expected to take part, as is dad Rolf, 73.

Filmmakers Michael Wech and Hanns-Bruno Kammertöns say the film's release will coincide with his 50th birthday – which was back in January – and the 25th anniversary of his first world title win.

They've promised 'never-before seen' footage belonging to the family, as well as exclusive interviews.

They said: "The film portrays not just an incomparable career, but also the many facets of a complex man."

Those many facets will include 'the remorseless and daring Formula 1 driver, the ambitious sportsman, the accomplished mechanic with a unique technical flair, the reliable team player and the loving family man'. Sounds legit.

Schumacher's manager Sabine Kehm told the Daily Mail: "Michael's outstanding career merits a celebration 25 years after the first of his seven world titles.

"We are very happy that this film is in such sensitive and ambitious hands."

Hailed as one of the greatest ever Formula 1 drivers, Schumacher was involved in a life-changing skiing accident five years ago, suffering serious head injuries after falling in the French Alps. He was airlifted to hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.

The accident left him in a coma for several months – but he is now out of hospital and back at home. However, very little is known about his current condition.

Speaking last year, Kehm said: "What can be said is that the family really appreciates the empathy of the fans.

"The people really do see and understand (his health situation) is not to be shared in the public eye."

To mark his birthday in January, the family released a statement which read: "You can be sure that he is in the very best of hands and that we are doing everything humanly possible to help him.

"Please understand if we are following Michael's wishes and keeping such a sensitive subject as health, as it has always been, in privacy."
